Since my daughter 3 years ago I have tried really hard not to fall into the frumpy mom category. Although my fashion has really gone downhill in the past few years (I have embraced the mom shorts every summer) I really wanted my make up to remain somewhat on-trend. Here’s the problem- I have two small children and zero time to sit down and read about make up trends. Back when I was single I looked pretty cute, since becoming a mom my look has morphed into haggard.
I really don’t have the time or energy to keep up with make up trends, so Birchbox sounded like the perfect solution. For $10 per month they send you a box with about 5 samples of great makeup. The best part is you could earn points for reviewing the products. If you received 5 products and reviewed all of them you would earn $5 to spend in the online Birchbox store.
I really liked my first few boxes, but after awhile it seemed as though the quality was going down. I used to receive new and innovative products that I felt were really tailored to me, in the past few months I have received countless shampoo and perfume samples- not at all what I am looking for. The make up items have been increasingly lackluster as well, I think I can paint my bedroom with all the mascara samples I have. Even though the boxes weren’t great, I could always justify the cost because it was only technically costing me $5. I faithfully reviewed each product every month for the $5 credit to the Birchbox store.
Last week Birchbox sent out an email stating the would no longer be giving out store credit for reviews. I had already been on the fence with Birchbox, and this was just the push I needed to leave. The samples they send out really aren’t worth the $10 price tag, especially when there are so many other great beauty subscription boxes. I recently tried the Amazon beauty box and it was amazing! The best part is Amazon gives you $10 to spend on select beauty items after you receive your box. Of course, I spent way more than $10 after I got my box in the mail- what a great strategy on Amazon’s part!
I do still want to try to feel trendy when it comes to makeup so I will be making the switch to another beauty box eventually. Amazon definitely tops my list, but I also am hearing great things about Sephora Play and Ipsy.
